Jim Benning on TEAM1040

Canucks GM talks coaching search, Ryan Kesler trade, draft

Canucks General Manager Jim Benning joined TEAM1040 on Friday afternoon, and discussed a variety of different topics.

The Canucks are still searching for a new head coach.  Willie Desjardins of the AHL's Texas Stars and John Stevens of the LA Kings are among the candidates, but with both men still involved in playoff races, the Canucks coaching search is being delayed.

Benning also admitted that Portland Winterhawks head coach, Mike Johnston, has interviewed for the Canucks job, while Marc Crawford is also in the mix.

The Canucks are figuring out what to do with Ryan Kesler, who still wants out of town. Benning says he's talking to Kesler's agent, Kurt Overhardt, every day as they try to figure out what to do.

Benning said he likes what the Canucks can add with the 6th overall pick in the draft, and also told Sekeres and Price that he's been talking to teams with higher picks and would consider making a deal in order to move up in the draft.
